DELRAY BEACH – One of the most well known numbers is also among the most confusing.

Pi – usually shorted to 3.14, but it continues infinitely – is the ratio between the circumference of a circle and it’s diameter. And March 14 (Get it? Today’s date is 3/14) is National Pie Day.

One thing’s for certain: South Florida comics love Pi. Although many of them seem to think the day celebrates the dessert rather than the mathematical day. Either way, comics Warren Scott, Freddy Stebbins, Lukas Jason, Steve Lamm and Nileja have a little fun with Pi Day.

In the above funny video, they are joined by ESPN West Palm (106.3 FM) broadcaster Ken LaVicka, who offers his multiple views on Pi Day, doing so immediately after he called the play-by-play of an FAU basketball game. Applause Break thanks Ken LaVicka for joining the South Florida comedy community in a little fun.

The idea of Pi – the relationship between the circle’s circumference and its diameter being a constant – has been around for nearly 4,000 years. Calculating the exact number will never happen. Anyone who paid attending in high school math classes knows that Pi is an infinite number. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Rajveer Meena recited Pi to 70,000 digits.

The first large celebration of Pi on March 14 occurred in 1988. In 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution recognizing Pi Day.

When people hear that today is Pi Day, they often think it’s “Pie Day.” Applause Break is OK with that. Why? Well, because pie is delicious. So go ahead and celebrate Pi by eating a slice of pie. It’s what Archimedes would have wanted.
