Jay Guy offers a unique description for his laid-back style of stand-up comedy.
“I would say, ‘friendly humor in a sadistic nature,’” Guy said, laughing.
Much of Guy’s routines stem from real life experiences, and this clip is no different.
During some downtime at his fire-rescue job a few months ago, Guy realized it was time to add some COVID-19 material to his routine. He wanted to present a different take than what he’d seen from other comics.
Guy realized he hadn’t seen anyone have a little fun with how the corona virus affected the family unit and family gatherings.
“Being in public safety, I go to a lot of old folk homes, and I know that relates to a lot of people,” Guy said.
He started thinking about some of the parade-like birthday drive-by celebrations that became a popular way of showing socially distant love during the pandemic. Then he realized how much they reminded him of trips to Lion County Safari – a Palm Beach County free-range zoo that offers a safari-similar experience from the comfort of a car.
“I actually wrote it and I laughed out loud when I was writing the comparison,” Guy said.
Guy spent a couple of months developing the bit, and had performed it a dozen or so times in public before the recording of this video in December of 2020 at the Palm Beach Improv. He co-featured for Jimmy Shubert that night.
A professional comic for more than a decade, Guy placed added focus on his comedy career over the past couple years. This video is proof that the extra attention and refinement is paying off.
