POMPANO BEACH – National Sandwich Day offers Americans 24 hours they can really stomach.

Millions of Americans are planning to eat a sandwich today for lunch.

Others might have consumed a delicious breakfast sandwich. And for dinner, isn’t a hamburger technically a sandwich?

Worried about going overboard? Don’t be. Today is the day to fill the menu with sandwiches.

Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021 is National Sandwich Day. It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to followers of South Florida comedy that local comics are quite fond of their sandwiches.

Applause Break hit Pompano Beach’s Spanx the Hog BBQ open mic earlier this week and asked South Florida comics Connie Fernandez, Steve Lamm, Hansen Sinclair, Nik Macik and Tim Hanlon to put their thoughts between two pieces of bread and serve us their musings on the humble sandwich. Their responses appear in the above funny video. (You’d think a connoisseur like Steve Lamm would have a better go-to sandwich. Dude, up your condiment game.)

Legend has it that the sandwich is named after John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. As the story goes, Montagu was playing cards and didn’t want to get up from the table, so he asked a servant to bring something he could eat without utensils. Moments later the servant handed him meat between two pieces of bread. And the modern sandwich had arrived.

Celebrating this day is easy. Grab a sandwich and do what comes naturally.

Some sandwiches to avoid today might be the French Dip, the Philly Cheesesteak, the hamburger and the Hot Pastrami. Those sandwiches all have their own days. But if those sandwiches are what you’re craving, have at it.

Enjoy National Sandwich Day – with mustard and pickles.
