DELRAY BEACH, Fla. – Monday’s best lineup nationally took the stage not at the Comedy Store, the Comedy Cellar or the Hollywood Improve, but rather at Atlantic Ave’s Tin Roof.

Jimmy Shubert and surprise guest Bret Ernst launched the final week of 2020 by rocking a packed house that included a cadre of national comics.

“The show was great man,” said Flip Schultz, one of those national comics now calling South Florida home. “You had some great local talent and then you get some heavy hitters like Bret Ernst and Jimmy f**king Shubert! A great hang tonight. The show was very well stacked. Everything was great tonight.”

Comics and comedy fans packed the Tin Roof, taking advantage of the free admission and rewarding the comics with applause breaks throughout the night.

“Standing room only on a Monday night,” gushed Tin Roof manager Anthony Terzo, himself a comic. “I thought it was amazing. We had some killers from beginning to end. All these LA guys here in Florida, We’re just taking advantage, kind of exposing them to the Florida scene.”

Omnipresent in South Florida over the past month, Shubert once again delivered a blistering set, drawing the first of multiple applause breaks with his Therapy Cat routine.

“Jimmy Shubert, true legend in the comedy game,” Terzo said. “It was a really good show from beginning to end.”

APPLAUSE BREAK-DOWN

LINEUP:
David Sadman (Host)
Nadeem Awad (Co-feature)
Alex Ansoleaga (Co-feature)

Jimmy Shubert (Headliner)

SHOW HIGHLIGHT

Ernst offered his services so that he could introduce Shubert, one of his early mentors. Following a 10-minute set – killing with his hilarious bit about ordering breakfast in Ohio – Ernst offered a heartfelt thank you to Shubert for all his help, then warmly embraced the comedy legend on stage. Ernst explains why doing so was important to him (and adds an impression of Jimmy Shubert) in the video.

BE OUR GUEST
No matter how many times Awad explains his Muslim family’s Christmas traditions to his hometown audience, the bit always kills. …Ansoleaga’s Christmas dilemma about which family member to give the gift of COVID is certainly relatable to many fans. Ansoleaga recently relocated – at least temporarily – from Los Angeles to South Florida. “The idea that we can just get out and do stuff here is amazing,” he said. “I’m grateful to be in front of live human beings.” …Sadman opened the show, battling a crowd that was still getting settled, leaving the crowd primed and ready.

WORKING THE ROOM
Ansoleaga had a little fun with a woman who brought a poodle-like dog that clearly wasn’t a service animal to the indoor show. “I would have brought my own dog,” he quipped. …During a bit about his own tryout of veganism, Awad found an unlikely friend in an audience member from Philadelphia – the pair bonding over the concept of breakfast cheese steaks.

COMICS TABLE
Along with the nation comics in attendance, a slew of local comics turned out for the show, including Steve Lamb, Fasil Malik, Minda and Dan Long. …New Yorker Zach McGovern, who delivered a strong performance at a previous Tin Roof show, is back in town and attended the show. …Veteran Bruce Smirnoff floated around the room all night. …Schultz is playing the Lake Park Black Box on Jan. 2.

ONE LINER
“It was fun tonight. It’s always good to come home for the holidays.” – Bret Ernst
