DELRAY BEACH – In years past, the rescheduling of Sadman Speakeasy IV from Wednesday to April 21 could have created a week lacking quality shows.

Not this year.

South Florida comedy fans have plenty of shows more than capable of packing a punch – especially later in the week.

This week’s Applause Planner Pick of the Week goes to the Palm Beach Improv, but it might not be the show most would expect.

Jimmy Shubert headlines Wednesday’s Jackie Sanchez-produced Jacked Up Comedy Show at the Palm Beach Improv. Sure, a Shubert show in South Florida isn’t that uncommon these days. He’s everywhere. That’s true. However, Applause Planner is selecting this show in particular its supporting cast is so strong.

Feature comic Jay Guy is arguably the most underrated local comic. He doesn’t perform as often as many local comics, but when he does he delivers. Sanchez is another top local comic, and she’ll take the stage for this one, as will Jake Ricca.

Wednesday’s show begins at 8 p.m, with tickets selling for $15. Get to this show early to ensure maximum comedic effect.

APPLAUSE PLANNER – Plan on It

Sunshine State Comedy – Wednesday, April 7, 2021, The Dubliner
Gina Savage and Johnny Azari quickly built this weekly Boca Raton show into a viable comedy destination. Wednesday’s show includes Zach McGovern, Dougie Almeida, Brittany Brave, Jeffrey Paul, Gabe Perez, Clyde Gordon and Bob Dibuono. Oh, and whiskey’s are $5 each – and the special applies to more than well and Jameson’s whiskeys. Alternative: For those who live further south, Steve Lamm headlines Wednesday’s Speakeasy Chronicles at Gatsby’s in Fort Lauderdale.

Irish You Were Here – Thursday, April 8, Kelly Brothers
Large show with plenty top local comics here. Head to Fort Lauderdale to catch Brett Morris, Jenn Hellman, Warren Scott, Mark Christopher and Stephanie Wood, among others. Alternative: Thirsty Thursday at The Butcher Shop Beer Garden and Grill in West Palm Beach includes performances by Mike Cintron, Kevin Javier and Riley Edwards.

Jimmy Shubert – Saturday, April 10, 2021, Sunrise Theater
It’s been already noted that Shubert is everywhere. Those who can’t catch him on Wednesday – or those who live a little further north – can take advantage of a second show a couple nights later. Alternative: Actor and national touring comic Craig Robinson plays two shows at the Palm Beach Improv.

James Gregory – Sunday, April 11, 2021, Sunrise Theater
Gregory’s been billed as the “Funniest Man in America.” Even if that’s a bit of hyperbole, Gregory should still put on a great show. Alternative: This week’s Monroe’s Red Light show produced by Bobby Mac offers Robert Bass as its headliner and Warren Scott as the feature.
