DELRAY BEACH – Numerous studies tell us what happens in our brain when we enjoy comedy.

One doctor finally decided to research what happens in our brain when we create comedy.

Dr. Ori Amir has a unique background. Along with having a doctorate in cognitive neuroscience, he’s also stand-up comedian.

He had access to technology to study people’s brains, so he asked a dozen comedians to create jokes while being examined. His results are cool, but not altogether surprising. Creating comedy prompts the brain to fire on all cylinders.

Also in today’s Stand-Up Spotlight, explore the funny side of meditation and take a trip inside Joe Rogan’s new comedy club.

Get ready for a funny weekend.

What happens in our brains when we’re trying to be funny

Did you hear the one about the neuroscientist who became a stand-up comic and who now researches artificial intelligence’s joke-writing potential?

After a mostly miserable childhood in the small Israeli village of Tel Aviv (his words), Ori Amir moved to the US, where he gained a PhD in cognitive neuroscience and launched a second career as a stand-up comedian.

The Wildly Funny Side of Meditation You Need to Try

Imagine you open the guided meditation app on your phone and press play on the daily insight. You hear an electric piano and a female voice, smooth as butter. “Wherever you may be right now,” she says, “just take a moment to acknowledge that at least one of your exes has it way worse off than you.”

Feel better?

This delightfully petty insight is from a daily-meditation app called Gfulness. Think of it as Headspace meets Funny or Die. Stand-up comedy meets the seated lotus position.

Joe Rogan opens anti-cancel comedy club: ‘I’m drunk and on mushrooms in my new club!’

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:“Hecklers Will Be Alienated” from Joe Rogan’s new comedy club.

The comedian and podcaster opened an anti-cancel culture comedy club, called Comedy Mothership, in Austin, Texas, this month, featuring a lineup of “canceled” comedians such as David Lucas, Ron White, Tim Dillon, Tony Hinchcliffe and Roseanne Barr.

Rogan said he aimed to create a safe space for comedians to share their dark humor without the fear of being canceled.
