DELRAY BEACH – Comedians no longer need a booking on one of the now-difficult-to-even-name late night television shows. There are so many, and the audiences are so much smaller compared to decades ago, that even an appearance on a broadcast TV show doesn’t ensure fame.

The pathway to success increasingly runs through the internet and self promotion.

Fledgling comics build audiences through video clips on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok (ugghh).

Several Florida comics – Cam Bertrand and Casey Peruski come to mind immediately – received a career boost from Dry Bar specials, which appear on an app and, ultimately, YouTube.

With access to platforms increasing and the cost of the tools needed to create specials decreasing, many comics are producing their own headlining specials. The most recent South Florida example is Danny Fallon, who recorded his special over two November days at The Coop in Delray Beach, then released it on YouTube shortly before Christmas, with clips appearing on social media.

Below is a Boston Globe story detailing how Boston comics have turned to creating their own success. Also, ever wonder who’s the richest comedian in the world? Stacker did a little research to name the Top 25 richest comics, with Jerry Seinfeld topping the list. Seinfeld performs at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Friday.

There’s also a story out of Canada about an elementary school teacher who’s students are starting to recognize him as a comic, and a profile of comic Jerrod Carmichael, host of the Gold Globes on Jan. 10.

Let’s keep it funny, people.

STAND-UP RUNDOWN: Jan. 5, 2023

Instead of waiting for their Netflix moment, Boston comics are creating their own specials

Stand-Up Spotlight Jan. 5, 2023:On a chilly Monday night in November, Will Noonan is strolling the swanky basement stage at Capo in South Boston. He has hosted a Wednesday night stand-up show here for six years, but tonight is different. There is no green room full of comics waiting for their spot on a showcase. Tonight is all about Noonan — five cameras capturing his 45-minute set from every angle.

Noonan is shooting his own stand-up comedy special. He’s been planning it for more than a year, and hopes it lands at a big streaming service like Netflix or Amazon. That would be a nice payday and career-changing exposure, but Noonan knows his most likely destination is YouTube, an option that might have seemed amateurish four or five years ago but is becoming an increasingly legitimate choice for indie stand-ups.

Richest comedians in the world

Stand-Up Spotlight Jan. 5, 2023:Want to make a comedian laugh? Tell them you’re getting into comedy to get rich. They might tell you the road ahead is bumpy at best and downright soul-crushing at worst, as one navigates through lonely hotel rooms and lifeless audiences while honing their craft. Only the truly passionate need apply because anyone else is bound to be disappointed.

Moe Ismail juggles stand-up comedy and teaching. He wants his students to chase their dreams, too

Stand-Up Spotlight Jan. 5, 2023:Moe Ismail has been living a double life: teaching elementary school by day and performing stand-up comedy by night.

Now, as he juggles substitute teacher gigs with a growing number of stand-up performances from coast to coast, he enjoys watching it dawn on some students that there’s more to “Mr. Ismail” than expected.
