DELRAY BEACH – Like many questionable tasks undertaken by young men, Matt Ross began this quest to impress a woman.
It didn’t exactly end as planned – but more on that later.
The 27-year-old Ross had attempted to grow a mustache before.
“I always do this thing where I grow it for two weeks and it gets disgusting and I get so self-conscious I shave it,” Ross explained.
This time, however, Ross was in the midst of a long distance relationship.
When Ross approached the point where he normally slashes his curiosity with a razor, his girlfriend implored him to let it grow a bit longer. She wanted to see it in person.
That encouragement prompted Ross to push through the awkward growth phase.
“It turned into a real – somewhat real – mustache,” said Ross, sounding both surprised and impressed.
Ross won’t likely be be confused with a 1970s porn star anytime soon. The mustache isn’t so much bushy as it is wiry. But it’s definitely there – right where it should be – above his upper lip.
It’s also become a bit of a conversation starter for him – although for other comics it’s a roasting point.
When Ross shared on social media a recent profile that appeared on Comedy Network Live, fellow comic Zach Bugarin, noting that the older picture accompanying the story lacked the ‘stache, commented: “That picture looks like your mustache was digitally removed justice league style.”
Ross, who is scheduled to perform at The Dubliner in Boca Raton on Wednesday, is keeping the mustache – at least for the time being.
Alas, the same can’t be said for the girlfriend.
The two ended their relationship without her ever seeing it in person.
At least he has something to remember her by. At least until another temptress wants to see him clean shaven.
