DELRAY BEACH – Veteran comic Jimmy Shubert continues to leave his mark on Delray.

On Tuesday Shubert popped into the open mic at the Delray Arts Garage, supercharging an evening that had been hit or miss – as open mics are prone to be – prior to his taking the stage.

“He comes up and lights everybody up and brings the whole show to life,” host and fellow comic Kaycee Conlee said. “It was really cool.”

While the dozen other comics who took the stage on Tuesday were given five minutes to perform, Conlee recognized that Shubert was rolling and allowed him to extend the performance to 15 minutes.

No one griped.

“It’s like a treat for the comedians too to have someone that we recognize and see as one of our heroes there,” Conlee said,

Following Shubert’s performance some of the younger fans in the audience shouted a request for his Instagram handle. (It’s @JimmyShubert for those who aren’t already following him.)

Local comic Franco Harris immediately followed Shubert, launching his set by noting that Shubert was one of his comedic idols growing up and joking that he now had the unenviable task of following Shubert to the stage.

Familiar local comics Nadeem Awad and Fasil Malik also performed, with Malik closing the show.

“It was so much fun,” Malik said. “It was just great to see surprises popping up.”

Conlee hosts an open mic at the Arts Garage on the first Tuesday of every month. It boasts a large stage and full, professional sound system. The Arts Garage also streamed the event live,

“This is a great spot,” Conlee said.
