LAKE PARK – For Wayne Felber, the first in-person event benefiting his recently formed charity, Team Felber, couldn’t have gone much better.

Well, he did have one little criticism.

“I thought Dean [Napolitano] was great,” Felber said following Sunday’s show at the Brewhouse Gallery. “I thought Jay [Guy] was great. I thought mine was so-so – but like I said, I’m by biggest critic.”

Felber may have been a little harsh on himself.

He sold nearly 60 tickets for an event that, with raffle ticket purchases and donations factored in, raised nearly $1,000 to help people with medical issues pay their cost-of-living bills.

“It was nice to see a full room,” said Felber, who had the crowd laughing from the moment the show started. “We sold out, which was good.”

When Team Felber became certified as a 501c3 charity in May Felber, himself a cancer survivor, set a goal of raising $10,000 in the first 12 months. Sunday’s event brings the charity close to the $8,000 mark in its first eight months.

To date they’ve helped pay water bills and car loans of people with medical problems in need. They’ve also help parents purchase Christmas presents.

“The benefit shows are really cool because you know it’s going to a good cause,” Napolitano said. “And usually people are there to laugh.”

APPLAUSE BREAK-DOWN

SHOW HIGHLIGHT
Napolitano came out firing, immediately addressing the COVID-19 pandemic. He led with the observation that everyone seemed to learn about the new COVID rules by going to the supermarket and having the rules thrust upon them. His most humorous – and insightful – comment noted how the stores went to great lengths to protect cashiers with Plexiglass, but the bag boys were on their own.

BE OUR GUEST
Guy’s explanation of how he tried to sell his girlfriend on trying something new by using Pornhub as an example always elicits laughs. On Sunday it even drew an applause break. …Felber’s bit on why he’s banned from Walgreens started the show rolling (hint, don’t mention crystal meth too loudly near him).

WORKING THE ROOM
At first Guy wasn’t sure his comedy would be a hit with an audience that was primarily 40 and older, but he was pleasantly surprised. “I misjudged them, thinking they were an older crowd and they weren’t going to relate to my material that’s catered toward a younger crowd,” Guy said. “They were right on board the whole time.”

COMICS’ TABLE
Napolitano will be playing Tanner’s Lakeside in Winter Haven on Thursday. He’s also looking forward to a yet-to-be-scheduled second taping of his one-man show Bart Drive Boys (See above video) in the coming months.

ONE-LINER
“It’s so intimate, everybody is involved. You see everybody in the audience. To me that’s the best.” – Napolitano on why he enjoys performing in smaller rooms like the Brewhouse Gallery.
