DELRAY BEACH – Friends want so send Tony Allen out in style, trying to make the best of the bad news the pioneering British comedian recently received.

They are planning to hold a wake for Allen, recently diagnosed with cancer, before he dies. Allen will be the guest of honor at his own wake.

To some, this might seem like bad taste – if not a little morbid. But most in the comedy world would probably agree that this sounds like a really good time. And considering the spate of recent comic losses, who wouldn’t have liked one last night with the recently departed before they departed to share laughs and stories?

Today’s Stand-Up Spotlight also includes a veteran comedian being asked whether his performance requires “trigger warnings;” Lil Duval’s thoughts on the state of comedy and Chrissie Mayr’s comments after her trans jokes went viral – and not necessarily in a positive way.

Let’s get the funny going today, folks.

Stand-Up Spotlight – June 6, 2023

A ‘wake’ for alternative comedy pioneer Tony Allen

Friends of alternative comedy pioneer Tony Allen are organizing a farewell gig for him after he was diagnosed with cancer.

The event is described as a wake for the 78-year-old ‘while he is still alive, where he can be guest of honor’.

Allen was instrumental in creating the modern comedy scene when he and Alexei Sayle set up a collective of politically motivated performers called Alternative Cabaret in 1979, with an ethos borrowed from punk and radical theater.

Lil Duval shares his thoughts on being a stand-up comedian in the public eye

Following the tragic passing of DC Young Fly’s longtime partner Ms. Jacky Oh, 33, Lil Duval shared his take on being a comedian in this era.

Since 2005, Duval has worked his way up in the entertainment industry. That year, the 43-year-old was a finalist on BET’s comedy competition series “Coming to the Stage.” The talented comedian has also appeared on Ice Cube’s “Hip Hop Squares,” “Guy Code,” and as the host of “Ain’t That America” in 2013.

Comedian heckled in viral clip defends Dylan Mulvaney jokes: Comedy club ‘one of the last places for freedom’

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:After a clip of her Dylan Mulvaney jokes triggering audience members went viral last week, comedian Chrissie Mayr is defending her right to say offensive jokes at her stand-up shows, claiming that “comedy clubs are one of the last few places of freedom” left in society.

During an interview with Fox News Digital this week, Mayr defended offensive comedy, ripped the transgender community for acting like the “protected class du jour,” and declared that “true equality is being able to joke about everybody.”

In the interview, Mayr talked about the jokes that infuriated several audience members at her stand-up performance earlier this month. During her set, Mayr joked Mulvaney should have a pair of “t–s” after identifying as a woman for some time now.
