DELRAY BEACH –  A couple of former Floridians are taking advantage of their unique genetics to achieve success in New York City.

Identical twins Annabel and Sabina Meschke, raised in Jupiter, perform on stage together, often finishing each other’s jokes and stories. It makes for a unique show that, for obvious scientific reasons, is difficult to duplicate.

The Meschke’s recently starred in the short film “Pennies From Heaven” in which they find a pickup truck loaded with pennies, launching their adventure.

A link to the full New York Times feature on the Meschke’s appears below. Applause Break will keep an eye out for a potential Meschke show in South Florida. Sounds like it would make for an interesting and entertaining night.

Also in today’s Stand-Up Spotlight, Joe Rogan has a different term for what others call his “anti-woke” comedy approach. Simply put, it’s just “comedy.” There’s a story about how stand-up comedy is helping Syrians trudge through their civil war, and a dive into the history of stand-up-turned-TV-series shows.

There’s funny all around us, folks.

STAND-UP SPOTLIGHT – May 10, 2023

Comedy Is in Their (Identical) DNA

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Annabel and Sabina Meschke, twin sister comedians, haul around a truck full of pennies in a new short film. Once a month, they audition potential triplets.

The twins took the stage in matching red cowboy boots. On a recent Wednesday night in Brooklyn — the kind of chilly, misty night made for staying in — about 200 people had come out to see them. The audience at Littlefield, a performance space in Gowanus, sipped cocktails through Twizzlers and ate tacos in folding chairs, hugging and laughing as they settled in for a night of comedy.

Joe Rogan Offers Perfect Description of Anti-Woke Comedy

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:It’s one thing to “kill” in Pittsburgh, St. Louis or Detroit. The best of the best do it on the coasts, and that’s where the talent agents find tomorrow’s stars.

Is Joe Rogan changing that decades-old wisdom?

The Spotify superstar has been drawing comedians to Austin, Texas, for the past few years. He’s been boasting of the city’s charms while using his switch from L.A. to Austin as a roadmap for others to follow.

Syrian Stand-up Comedy Has War-weary Crowds In Stitches

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:In a dimly lit Damascus cafe, Sharief Homsi kicked off comedy night with a quip about war-battered Syria’s modern-day prince charming: an eligible bachelor with attractive supplies of fuel and electricity.

“Marry me, I have a bright future: 100 litres of petrol, solar panels to generate electricity and three gas canisters,” he said, performing a mock proposal that had the audience howling.

A Taxonomy of Semi-autobiographical Comedian Sitcoms

Comedians have been building shows around their personae since before television. The Burns and Allen Show was a radio program in the ’30s and ’40s about real-life married couple George Burns and Gracie Allen. The Jack Benny Program was about Jack Benny trying to put on The Jack Benny Program. These radio shows became TV shows and one of the main selling points of TV. The stars you know are coming into your home — how exciting! Bupkis, Pete Davidson’s new Peacock show about the trials and tribulations of being Pete Davidson, is merely the latest iteration of a formula that has made dozens of performers household names.
