Top Comedians React to New Golden Globes Stand-Up Category: ‘It Should Be Called the Ricky Gervais’

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:The comedy community is just grateful to be nominated.

Comedy is a notoriously tough sell when it comes to awards season, though the Globes have always shown love in the form of a dedicated category for comedies and musicals in the best picture in the space. The live special format has reached global saturation and popularity thanks to streaming platforms, YouTube and social media. Six solo comics, or a breakout member of a troupe or ensemble, will duke it out for the prize for the first time on the Jan. 7 telecast.

Which So-Called ‘Canceled’ Comic Will Win the First Golden Globe for Best Stand-Up Performance?

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:On Tuesday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association officially added a category to their annual Golden Globe Awards for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television, which means that it’s only a matter of time until Dave Chappelle adds another trophy to his collection of awards won while complaining about being silenced.

This upcoming January’s ceremony will be the first year in which comedians will compete in the new category, and any comedy special released on television or streaming during 2023 will be eligible to receive the award. In addition to the stand-up honors, this will also be the first year in which one film will win the Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, a category reserved for blockbuster films for which the producers felt that hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue was not enough recognition.

Meet Wende Curtis, Denver’s Queen of Comedy

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Given just four minutes to win over the audience packed into Comedy Works in downtown Denver, Jeremy Cash unleashes a string of one-liners. “I went to a climate change protest over the weekend, but I couldn’t find any parking,” he says, “so I just drove around for 14 hours.” It’s a Tuesday evening in July, and Comedy Works is hosting New Talent Night, which, over the years, has become a weekly tradition. “I don’t have kids,” Cash continues, “but if I ever do, I’m going to home-school them because if they’re going to get bullied, I want to do it.” His allotted time expended, Cash walks offstage to the sound of laughter and deserved applause. More than 200 comedians signed up for the 15 spots available tonight, most, if not all, with the goal of polishing their performances and attracting the attention of someone who’s not even in attendance: Wende Curtis.
