STAND-UP RUNDOWN: Spot The AI Joke

DELRAY BEACH – it’s widely recognized that artificial intelligence has a long way to go before matching a comedian joke-for-joke.

But how far, really?

One group of comedians intends to try to answer that question by hosting a game show-type night where five comedians deliver one joke each every round. Four of those comedians will be telling their own jokes. One will tell a joke written by AI.

Audience members will be asked to identify the AI joke in each round. Whoever gets the most answers correct will win a prize.

At first glance, this would seem an easy task. But the comedian telling the AI joke has a chance to embrace the joke, and that delivery aspect adds a level of intrigue to the game. And, who knows, maybe they’ve found a funny computer.

Not interested in AI comedy? Today’s Stand-Up Spotlight also includes a show where comedians bring their dogs on stage for their performances. There’s also a story where Jay Leno tells some tales about his early days in stand-up, and another about stuttering comedian Nina G.

Funny takes all forms. Enjoy.

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Most weekends, comedy fans in Houston can find an entertaining stand-up show at a local venue to take in with friends. But none include man’s best friend. This weekend, House Party Comedy aims to change that when it goes to the dogs.

House Party Comedy is the city’s only non-profit comedy showcase and it returns Saturday, July 22 with a show dubbed “That’s My Dawg!” The comics performing on the bill will each bring their dogs onstage with them for their respective sets, according to Jacob Calle, House Party Comedy’s host. The one-of-a-kind show is a literal house party, held periodically at Calle’s Midtown residence, located at 1509 Stuart Street.

When Jay Leno recalls those rough early days in Boston comedy, he has to laugh

Before any dreams of hosting “The Tonight Show,” or being a big shot in the Los Angeles stand-up scene, or playing theaters like the Chevalier, where he’ll appear Aug. 4, Jay Leno was just a kid in Andover who wanted to crack people up. He considers himself lucky that he found encouragement in his early days, starting in high school when his teacher, Mrs. Hawkes, let him give a talk instead of writing a term paper. Leno is dyslexic, and had trouble in school, but he figured he could talk for 20 minutes with no problem.

Comedian Nina G. Uses Jokes To Change How People View Stuttering

Stand-up comedian Nina G’s first solo comedy album, “Stutterer Interrupted,” has become a quick success, debuting at No. 1 on iTunes’ comedy ranking and Amazon’s new releases under comedy.

It’s easy to see why the album has had such a momentous start — Nina is hilarious. She infuses her material with her unique lived experience while still being relatable to a broader audience.
