DELRAY BEACH -The No. 1 rule for any stand-up comedian is simple: Be funny.

But do comedians also have to be socially responsible?

That’s a question that Newsweek attempts to answer in the lengthy article below.

In part of it, several “experts” argue that comedians like Dave Chappelle, Joe Rogan and Louis C.K. have become so popular that they transcend cancel culture. No matter what they do, the argument goes, their fans hold those comedians in such high regard that they will never abandon them.

With fans like that, the article argues, comedians have the responsibility to be truthful, kind and non-divisive. That feels like a lot to put on an entertainer, but nowadays it does seem as though comedians are some of the few speaking truth to power. It’s a curious debate.

Today’s Stand-Up Spotlight also includes a story about comedian T. K. Kirkland stealing Charlie Murphy’s Rolex; a feature about Jon Lovitz; and new comedy club coming to Illinois.

Now, get going with the funny.

When Comedians Become Cult Leaders

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Author and former MSNBC host Touré sparked a spirited, albeit brief, Twitter debate back in October 2021, when he defended Dave Chappelle from accusations that his comedic prowess had waned with his ongoing success.

At the time, Chappelle had released his Netflix special The Closer, a standup show that contained material widely branded “transphobic.” Culture critic Touré, who has often spoken in defense of the LGBTQ+ community, saw the special as a crowning moment.

Over the years, he has shared the stage with comedy greats, such as Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence, and made memorable appearances on popular television shows like “Def Comedy Jam” and “ComicView.” Kirkland has also ventured into acting with roles in films like 1997’s Strays and guest appearances on popular television series, including “In Living Color” and “Moesha.”

No joke. Comedy club OKd for downtown Oak Park

The Oak Park Zoning Board of Appeal’s most recent meeting felt more akin to a comedy open mic night than a hearing for a special use permit. The reason for the stitches? Comedy Plex, a new comedy club and training venue coming to downtown Oak Park, which won unanimous ZBA approval last Wednesday.
