DELRAY BEACH – What happened to comedian Siti Nuramira Abdullah makes cancel culture seem tame.

During an open mic at the Crackhouse Comedy Club in Malaysia, Abdullah discarded several of her items of clothing.

Even though she remained mostly clothed – none of her bits and pieces showing – the club owner took offense and called the police, who promptly arrested Abdullah and the partner recording her set.

In the mostly Muslim country, she had bared too much.

Abdullah ended up pleading guilty to deliberately hurting the religious sentiments of others, agreeing to pay a roughly $1,800 fine. Had she been convicted of the original charge – causing religious disharmony – the punishment could have been much worse.

The story of her guilty plea, along with one about her original arrest, lead today’s Stand-Up Spotlight. Sometimes we forget how much freedom American comics do have.

The Spotlight also offers a Q&A with Howie Mandel, and a look inside the Edmonton, Canada comedy scene.

Take advantage of your freedoms today, but be sure to keep it funny.

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:After more than four decades working as a stand-up comedian, Howie Mandel said taking center stage today is even more fulfilling than when he first did it back in the late 1970s.

“It’s my respite,” Mandel, 67, told MySA during an interview last week. “Everything I’ve ever done – everything you know me from – was based on my stand-up comedy. Throughout these 40 years, I’ve done different things, but I’m always a stand-up comic first.”
