Here’s another example of stand-up comedy preparing comedians for life in the business world.

Steve Cody regularly draws upon his experiences as a stand-up comedian while working for the public relations company he founded.

Cody says the self-deprecating style he developed on stage and his ability to relate to an audience are invaluable in his business.

Nearly all comedians dream of becoming a superstar, but it’s good to know there could be a new career to fall back on.

Cody is a graduate of Northeastern University. Today’s Stand-Up Spotlight also includes a story about the comedy scene at similarly named Northwestern University, which was once ranked as the No. 3 college for aspiring comedians (link to those ranking included).

And there are two stories about veteran comedians. Sasha Baron Cohen is bringing back his Ali G character. Chris Tucker is planning a tour.

There’s some funny to launch a new week.

STAND-UP SPOTLIGHT – Aug. 14, 2023

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:“There are a lot of CEOs in the PR world who take themselves far too seriously,” says Steve Cody, founder and CEO of public relations firm Peppercomm.

On the surface, the 1977 Northeastern University graduate might look like any number of suit-wearing executives, but he knows a thing or two about the value of a good laugh. Cody has decades of experience in public relations, having gone from vice president of Hill+Knowlton to founder of his own firm in 1995, but he also has spent years on the New York City stand-up comedy circuit.

A guide to Northwestern’s vibrant comedy scene

The story is all too familiar: A Wildcat doesn’t make the cut for Mee-Ow their freshman year but goes on to perform at The Second City — Chicago’s premier comedy club — post-graduation, only to land a spot on “Saturday Night Live” a few years later.

Ranked the third-best school for aspiring comedians by College Magazine in 2019, Northwestern was once home to many of today’s late-night and stand-up stars. Billy Eichner (Communication ’00), Ziwe Fumudoh (Communication ’14), and Ana Gasteyer (Communication ’89) are just some of these well-known comedians.

Ali G to be revived by Sacha Baron Cohen

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:A parody wannabe gangster, Baron Cohen’s Ali G was first introduced in 1998 on the sketch series The 11 O’Clock Show before being developed into a standalone series.

The long list of politicians, celebrities and experts duped by Ali G’s prank interviews could well see some additions soon, though no further details on tour dates and locations have been revealed.

Chris Tucker makes stand-up comeback after 10 years; fans reminisce his return

Chris Tucker introduced comedy to the world way before there was scope for it in movies in a commercial sense. The Rush Hour actor earned a name for himself as a legend in comedy. Some of his most notable works include Friday, Jackie Brown, Money Talks, and The Fifth Element. However, the American actor had been out of the limelight for a long time. It was only this week that he announced his on-stage return with a new stand-up tour. The news has come as a surprise to many of his long-term fans who grew up watching his comedy on the screen. So, here is everything to know about his new tour, tickets, and streaming details.
