STAND-UP RUNDOWN: Too Much Social?

As comedians try to balance their time between writing and social media, are they spending too much time focusing on promotion?

For better or worse, social media promotion has become a requirement for aspiring comedians.

For some, it’s help launch their careers. But for others, could posting too often on social media be holding them back?

That’s the argument made by comedian Nick Pupo. He suggests that too many comedians are spending their time attempting to grow their following rather than creating and refining their material. As a result, he says, much of the comedy on social media looks and sounds the same.

Pupo gets a little dramatic when suggesting that he wants to go hide in the woods to escape social media, but he does have  a point. Plenty of comedians out there could spend a little more time on their writing. After all, that’s the heart of what they do.

Today’s Stand-Up Spotlight includes news that Jo Koy has a couple new specials coming, along with a feature on rising comedian Ashwin Srinivas.

Get out there and find the funny.

Stand-up on social media is the same joke told a thousand times

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Social media has done wonders for stand-up comedy. Comedians of any kind, all over the world, can gain recognition for their work simply by posting it online. If their content goes viral often enough, they can grow their following into the millions, which could allow them to tour the world and share their live act with dedicated fans.

And this is a really special thing… or maybe it’s an absolute travesty of creativity and mental stability. Who’s to say?

Meet the ‘relatable’ stand-up comedian Ashwin Srinivas

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:A ‘little awkward’ and an ‘overthinker,’ Ashwin Srinivas is a stand-up comedian, who jokes about his life, relationships, jobs and everything relatable. An IT professional by day, a stand-up comedian at night, Ashwin started off with performing in a room full of just a couple of audiences.

“From Chennai, I relocated to Bengaluru about eight years back, to explore the growing market for stand-up comedy, as it was unlikely for me to get opportunities here. I started out as an audience for budding comedians and made my way through observing and learning about the art closely,” says Ashwin recalling his initial fear of performing on stage in front of a huge crowd.
