Cancel Culture may be relenting a bit, but it’s still out there.

Take the case of Graham Linehan. Complaints about his transgender jokes prompted the cancellation not only of his scheduled performance in Scotland, but the entire show that included him.

Theater operators said they were unaware of Linehan’s jokes when booking him, and elected to cancel the show when his material came to their attention. They said this despite promoting Linehan as a cancelled comedian.

Get your story straight, guys.

Is there a place for transgender jokes in polite society? One story in today’s Stand-Up Spotlight highlights Ugandan comedian Phillip Luswata. The Spotlight also delves into the best stand-up specials currently on Netflix.

When Phillip Luswata and friends started mapping out Uganda’s early comedy performances, Pablo was a journalist meant to live the story as it developed. Yet, many years later, he would outlive the story as the last comic standing, writes, EDGAR R. BATTE.

An apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, Pablo, born Kenneth Kimuli grew up observing his grandmother, Janet Kagango, a fine dancer and his grandfather, two people he says were hilarious. Later, he would take on their character that as an adult, he kept his workmates in bouts of laughter.

The best stand-up comedy on Netflix right now

Netflix may have taken the whole “Summer Friday” thing too seriously this year, as there doesn’t appear to be any new stand-up comedy coming to the streaming service in August. Rather than view it as a disappointment, however, look at it as a chance to watch some of the best stand-up comedy specials you’ve missed in the past like Tom Segura: Sledgehammer.
