STAND-UP RUNDOWN: Striking Upside?

With the current writer's strike pushing late night hosts to stand-up, will those shows be funnier once the work stoppage is resolved?

The Hollywood writer’s strike, now more than three months old, may actually have a positive effect on comedy.

With the break extending this long, many late night television hosts have returned to their stand-up roots.

The drop-off in the level of comedy on late night shows has been extreme. They’re not funny, and people aren’t watching.

Maybe having the hosts perform their own material in front of live audiences will help them reconnect with the public. Maybe those experiences will lead to better writing. Maybe?

The remainder of today’s Stand-Up Spotlight is packed with mega-star news. Dave Chappelle recently launched a new tour, and there’s a long list of comedians who helped. Bill Burr is making his directorial debut in a Netflix show he’ll also star in. And there’s a feature on Kevin Hart.

Start the day with a little funny.

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:What are all of the late-night stars up to right now?

As The Late Show, The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night and The Daily Show were the first shows to be hit by the writers strike back in May, the hosts of those shows have not had the opportunity to give their hot takes on television in over three months – although the majority of them have all been regularly seen on picket lines across New York and LA.

Bill Burr Directorial Debut Old Dads Now Set to Debut on Netflix This Fall

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Comedian Bill Burr is taking the leap behind the camera with his directorial debut, Old Dads, which is now set to grace screens courtesy of Netflix on October 20th. His stand-up comedy and standout roles in movies and TV shows have solidified the actor’s reputation in the industry. Fresh from the ever-evolving cinematic carousel of Netflix comes a new comedy that promises to tickle your funny bones and perhaps tug a little at your heartstrings.

Per Deadline, Old Dads springs from a collaboration between Miramax, Burr’s own All Things Comedy, and All of Us Productions. The narrative, co-penned by Burr himself alongside Ben Tishler, offers a comedic glance into the challenges of middle age, adaptation, and the intricacies of fatherhood. Bill Burr doesn’t just stay behind the scenes, though; he also stars as the central figure, Jack.

From Punchlines to Profits: Kevin Hart’s Unstoppable Success

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Kevin Hart isn’t the type of guy content to sit around waiting for movie studios to call. He’s been cultivating a powerhouse multimedia empire in the ultimate “side hustle”, and it’s firmly putting him in the driver’s seat. The Los Angeles-based actor owns two media companies, HartBeat Productions, and Laugh Out Loud, with an 85% stake in the latter valued at an impressive $650 million. Hart frequently ranks among the highest-paid comedians, collaborates with A-List talent on high-profile movie projects, and maintains a dizzying amount of collaborations and development deals through his two production firms. Endorsement deals are aplenty to say the least—Nike, Chase J.P Morgan, Fabletics Men, H&M, Hyundai, Foot Locker, Tommy John, Old Spice. And as if that weren’t enough, he’s created a tequila brand to call his own.
