Earlier this year the Boca Raton-based comedy show producers began holding stand-up comedy shows inside a theater at the Movies of Delray. The shows are often sold out.
Now New York’s famed Comedy Cellar is coming to theaters. A production company just signed a deal with Regal Cinemas to begin streaming Comedy Cellar shows live in theaters. Could comedy shows – live or streamed – at movie theaters become a trend?

The Comedy Cellar Is Coming to a Big Screen Near You
If you went to the movies the week of December 18, 1987, you were spoiled for choice. You could have bought tickets to see blockbusters like Wall Street; Planes, Trains and Automobiles; or Three Men and a Baby. Or you might have gone to see the surprising box-office juggernaut that pulled in more money than all of them that week: Eddie Murphy’s stand-up special Raw.
That film, along with specials like Richard Pryor’s Live On the Sunset Strip and The Original Kings of Comedy, is part of a minor but notable legacy of stand-up being broadcast in movie theaters. The model all but vanished after streaming services monopolized the market in the early 2010s — Kevin Hart’s 2016 special What Now? was the last notable special to have received a theatrical release — but on Saturday, August 5, a newer streaming service will test the public’s appetite for stand-up in this setting once again.

As reported by Deadline back in August 2022, Rachel Brosnahan, the leading lady of Amazon Prime Video’s hit series ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’, reflected on her journey portraying the stand-up comedian and mother of two, Miriam “Midge” Maisel. “These people like to keep me on my toes. Just when I think I kind of have the hang of it, or start to feel more comfortable, there’s some giant curveball,” Brosnahan said, giving audiences a taste of her acting challenges.
Remembering Tom Sobel: A Mic Drop Heard Across the Comedy Universe
Louisville stand-up comedy impresario Tom Sobel died on Friday, July 21. He had been very ill since the start of the year, and exited the stage way too early, at age 72. Tom was a legend in the comedy industry, with a reach that expanded far beyond this part of the world. Comedians across the nation have commented on social media that they “would not be where they are today if it hadn’t been for Tom Sobel,” and I count myself among them. I recently heard my wife tell our grown daughters, “You all wouldn’t even exist if your daddy hadn’t met Tom Sobel.”
