STAND-UP RUNDOWN: Unfunny Input

Instead of declaring that computers can't create comedy, should the blame be placed on humorless engineers prompting AI?

DELRAY BEACH – People keep trying to get Artificial Intelligence to write stand-up comedy – and they keep failing.

The latest example leads today’s Stand-Up Spotlight.

There are two things to remember about these AI comedy stories. First, anyone who has worked with AI realizes that it’s creative output is directly related to the input (prompts) it’s given. Most of the people asking AI to create jokes are engineers, not comedians. Would the output be different with a comedian running the program?

Second, many of these “AI comedian tests” involve one of the engineers delivering the jokes. Performance is a crucial part of any stand-up comedy show. Those unaccustomed to making people laugh aren’t suddenly going to get funny.

So the question now is, will better input yield funnier computers?

Today’s Spotlight includes news that Tanael Joachim (TJ) is bringing his stand-up to Miami. There’s also a feature on Jessica Kirson and, for Patton Oswalt fans, a ranking of his comedy specials.

Let’s get August off to a funny start, folks.

STAND-UP SPOTLIGHT – August 1, 2023

Can ChatGPT write stand-up comedy?

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:AI is coming for your job – unless you’re a stand-up comedian. Could comedy writers be the only ones safe from redundancy? Can ChatGPT write stand-up comedy? The art of the joke has long been the remit of those with a human touch, so let’s put the bots to the test. Try reading “What is ChatGPT – and what is it used for?” or “How to use ChatGPT on mobile” to save yourself from what’s about to unfold down the page.

We made ChatGPT write a stand-up set, performed out loud to a live studio audience (of our co-workers). Here’s how that went…

Comedian Tanael Joachim brings ‘Haitian Dreams’ to Miami stage

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Haitian stand-up comedian Tanael Joachim, popularly known as TJ, is to bring his much-anticipated “Haitian Dreams” tour to the Sandrell Rivers Theater in Miami on Saturday, August 5th.

Famed for his humorous insights on a broad range of compelling subjects — from his personal immigration journey to the U.S., to his musings on religion, languages, and America’s global position — TJ has carved out a niche for himself in the world of comedy.

Jessica Kirson: ‘I Laugh at Myself and People Get Hurt’

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Jessica Kirson’s story could have been like that of hundreds of other American stand-ups: years of hopping from one New York comedy club to another, esoteric tours taking in remote U.S. cities, a foray into late-night television and then a slow decline into anonymity.

This is not a story that would make anyone shed a tear, even if it involved an extraordinary talent. And Kirson is indeed an extraordinary talent, a comedian who focuses on communicating with her audience using the rawest of humor. She talks out-loud about self-loathing and self-doubt, while her physical comedy draws on a wealth of characters – most of them on the decidedly Jewish spectrum. It is very revealing, very authentic and, above all, quintessentially Jewish direct humor.
