BOCA RATON – Laughter may not be the best medicine, but a group of would-be comedians are finding it does help.

There’s a comedy club in Los Angeles offering free stand-up comedy classes for cancer patients, cancer survivors, and those helping cancer patients. The students are learning to joke about their pain.

There’s plenty of crying, but also a great deal of laughter an relief.

Comedy may not change the world, but it can help ease the pain in an individual’s life.

Today’s Stand-Up Spotlight also includes a Q&A with Ahmed Ahmed. Frequent readers will recall Applause Break’s feature on the Egyptian-born comic when he performed at Biergarten in Boca Raton.

Then, there’s a story on comedian Ryan Sickler overcoming a blood clotting disorder, and a feature about Detroit-based comedian Camila Ballario.

It’s the final day of July. Let’s keep it funny.

STAND-UP SPOTLIGHT – July 31, 2023

Cancer patients will take the stage for a night of stand-up comedy in Santa Monica

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:SANTA MONICA, Calif. (KABC) — What’s scarier than learning you have cancer? How about going on stage and telling jokes about it? A unique program is transforming cancer patients into comedians all for a good cause.

Cancer and comedy are two words that don’t usually add up. But for local comedian Nicole Blaine, humor equals healing.

“It ends up becoming a vessel for an entire group of people in a room to feel I can survive. I can get through this,” Blaine said.

INTERVIEW: Egyptian-American comedian Ahmed Ahmed on being Muslim in the US, his comedy style, and his special show this weekend in Bali

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Being a person of color in the US (and a Muslim, on top of that) is no laughing matter, especially for people with career paths like Ahmed Ahmed. Ahead of his special show at Kuta Social Club this Saturday, he made time for a chat with Coconuts Bali in which he touched on being a minority, his comedy style, and, of course, his upcoming show.

How comedian Ryan Sickler battled a rare disorder and laughed in the face of death

Baltimore native Ryan Sickler is a comic’s comic. His storytelling style is unparalleled, his high-pitched laugh is infectious, and his spirit draws you in like the smooth inhalation of a joint — which Sickler also knows a thing or two about. Father to a sweet (and hilarious) 8-year-old daughter Stella, host of the wildly successful “The HoneyDew Podcast,” a new special called “Lefty’s Son” released in April on You Tube, and on the road with his Live and Alive Tour, Sickler appears to have it all. And he does — including a rare blood-clotting disease called factor V Leiden that almost killed him.

Charming Detroit comic Camila Ballario is on a roll

Detroit comedian Camila Ballario already knew her way around a stage and microphone before starting her stand-up career seven years ago. In addition to telling jokes on stage, she’s also a musician, songwriter and classically trained singer.

Born in Argentina and raised in Ann Arbor, Ballario recently moved to Detroit because of how often she was performing comedy in the city. Case in point, she’s headlining WDET’s What’s So Funny About Detroit show at the Old Miami Thursday, kicking off a string of Metro Detroit performances throughout the rest of the year.
