DELRAY BEACH – “Slap Shot” is one of the finest sports movies ever, yet few link hockey and comedy.

The NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks may be changing that. As part of their offseason development camp, the Blackhawks are having their recent draft choices develop off-ice skills. One of those, as detailed in the Stand-Up Spotlight below, is stand-up comedy.

That’s a summer workout program Applause Break can back.

Heading into the weekend, today’s Spotlight also includes Joe Rogan discussing his early stand-up comedy struggles, a review of Rob Schneider’s comedy special, and a list of the Top 25 stand-up comedy specials currently on Netflix.

Be sure to put a little funny in your weekend.

Blackhawks prospects enjoy off-ice approach at development camp

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:CHICAGO — Taking boxing classes, playing Spikeball, learning breathing exercises, even playing the part of a stand-up comedian.

No, those don’t sound like the typical activities at an NHL development camp, but the Chicago Blackhawks chose a different approach to theirs this summer: Stay off the ice, concentrate on getting stronger mentally and physically, and have some fun too.

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Rob Schneider: Woke Up In America’ On Fox Nation, Where The Comedian Throws Red Meat To The Base

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:In 2023, it’s already passé in comedy specials to traffic in bits about being “cancelled” or “woke” or wondering whether comedians can even joke about anything these days, which means it’s time for streaming platforms you wouldn’t go looking for comedy to start delivering comedy for your niche interests. Enter Fox Nation. The SVOD spin-off of Fox News got into the stand-up comedy special game earlier this year with Roseanne Barr’s Cancel This, and has followed that up with another holdover from the late 1980s, Rob Schneider. Is this comedy just for Boomers, or is it at more than OK for everyone?

The 25 Best Stand-Up Comedy Specials On Netflix Right Now (July 2023)

Going out on a limb here: you could probably use a good laugh. Fortunately, a lot of the best stand-up comedy is more than just silly stuff. Today’s most popular stand-up comedians have expanded their vision to become more like camp counselors and philosophers who can also tell a mean fart joke and make you laugh out loud. Fortunately, it’s fairly obvious where to turn for The Funny these days because no streaming service has invested in stand-up quite like Netflix. Forget the world and stream some acerbic humor because we’re listing the Top 25.
