DELRAY BEACH – Some 30 years ago, back when I was editor of the University of Hartford’s student newspaper the informer, Dana Carvey and Mike Myers brought their stand-up tour to campus.

Carvey and Myers were about to become mega stars – this happened prior to the premiere of Wayne’s World and would certainly be great interviews.

A couple of freshmen writers asked to interview the opening act – a relatively new comedian I hadn’t heard of. I told them to have at it.

During the final minutes of out interviews with Carvey and Myers, the two writers and the opening act entered the room and sat quietly, listening. That comic might still have been a teenager, and didn’t even look that old.

A few minutes later that opening act took the stage, and to say that Chris Rock killed that night doesn’t do his performance justice. I, like most anyone who’s ever enjoyed a Rock performance, have been a fan ever since.

On Saturday Rock became the first stand-up comedian to perform live on Netflix. Today’s Stand-Up Spotlight focuses solely on that show. During his performance Rock addresses the Will Smith Oscars slap, Jada Pinkett Smith, victimhood culture, Meghan Markle and more. While most reviews of the show are positive, we did include one negative write-up for balance.

But the best advice is to simply watch the special. For those who don’t have a Netflix account, South Florida comedian John Loveless has the passcode.

It’s a new week. Let’s keep the funny Rock’in.

STAND-UP SPOTLIGHT – March 6, 2023

‘It still hurts’: Chris Rock goes after Will Smith and also makes Netflix history

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Nearly one year after getting slapped by Will Smith at the Oscars, Chris Rock finally hit back in a highly anticipated new Netflix stand-up special that aired live Saturday night.

“People are like, ‘Did it hurt?’ It still hurts!” Rock joked in his new special, Selective Outrage. “I got ‘Summertime’ ringing in my ear.”

Rock, 58, speaking to a live audience at the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore, told jokes about the incident for the first time in front of a national audience. The comedian said he thinks the slap really had its origins between Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who had what she described as a romantic “entanglement” with singer August Alsina while the couple were separated.

Review: Chris Rock becomes a sad old man yelling at clouds in live Netflix special

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Perhaps Chris Rock should have titled his new Netflix standup special, “Get Off My Lawn.”

That’s the tone Rock presented in “Selective Outrage,” his latest standup special, performed from Baltimore in Netflix’s first live global event (now streaming).

He’s crotchety. He’s mean. He’s predictable and boring.
