STAND-UP RUNDOWN: Florida Fails Funny Test

A new, somewhat dubious, study finds Florida to be one of the least funny states in the nation.

Maybe Florida isn’t really that funny after all.

A new, and somewhat dubious, study ranking the level of funny in all 50 states, placed Florida near the bottom.

Massachusetts ranked No. 1 overall, with New York right behind it. Florida landed at No. 41, ahead of Delaware and Idaho. The study found North Dakota to be the least funny state.

Now, there are obvious flaws in the study. To begin with, a company that makes cosmetic dental products conducted the study. And the methodology included number of comedy specials recorded in the state, number of residents per comedy club and number of residents per comedy festivals.

Still, now that its COVID-induced surge has subsided, Florida hasn’t felt all that funny lately. Maybe this survey is onto something.

Today’s Stand-Up Spotlight also includes and update on post-SNL Shane Gillis, a look at Alex Bornstein’s new show and a review of Jimmy O Yang’s new special.

Get out there and get the funny.

Study Reveals America’s Funniest Cities

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Smiles are contagious, and if you have the perfect smile —– whether naturally or with snap-on veneers — you want every excuse to show it off. However, humor tends to be relative and often regional, so we set out to discover which cities in the U.S. are the funniest.

We analyzed a range of information to create a “funny score” for the 25 most populous U.S. cities and all 50 states to find out which locations have the best senses of humor. Each location was given a score out of 100 based on these factors:

Developing a live set with stand-up comedian Shane Gillis

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Since that time in 2019 when stand-up comedian and sketch artist Shane Gillis was let go from Saturday Night Live due to past indiscretions (jokes touched by ethnic and sexual orientation slurs taken out of context), it has been nothing but net for the Mechanicsburg, PA native. Along with four-hours-worth of YouTube bits in collaboration with fellow cancelled comic Louis CK (their history of U.S. presidents is hilarious), Gillis co-hosts the highly-rated Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast (with pal Matt McCusker), wrote for Comedy Central’s Delco Proper and YouTube’s Gilly & Keeves, dropped his self-funded, debut comedy special Shane Gillis: Live in Austin on YouTube – so far viewed 7+ million times – and Gilly & Keeves: The Special. Soon, he’ll co-star in his first mainstream sit-com in the upcoming 2023 season of Peacock’s Bupkis with Joe Pesci, Edie Falco, and – oddly enough – Saturday Night Live alum Pete Davidson.

Alex Borstein Talks Her New Prime Video Special and What It Means to Be a Comedian

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Many of us know Alex Borstein as Susie Myerson on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel or as the voice of Lois on Family Guy. But she’s more than the characters she plays, as evidenced in her new Prime Video musical comedic special, Corsets & Clown Suits. In the special, Alex speaks to the audience as a peer, blurring the lines between fiction and reality as she discusses her divorce and resulting move to Barcelona, Spain.

Jimmy O. Yang: Guess How Much? Review – a special filled with highs and lows

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Jimmy O. Yang started doing stand-up comedy at 21 in Los Angeles. In 2014, he made his first late-night stand-up appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show.
