STAND-UP RUNDOWN: Age Isn’t A Detriment

Being the oldest woman in stand-up comedy doesn't keep 88-year-old D'yan Forest from being hit on after her shows.

DELRAY BEACH – D’yan Forest constantly deals with a surprising problem.

The world’s oldest female comedian – she’s 88 – says she’s persistently being hit on by younger men.

Now, at her age, there aren’t many older men left on the planet.

But her somewhat raunchy act draws in much younger men – some even in their 20s. Kids these days…

Today’s Stand-Up Spotlight also includes a look at how – surprisingly – comedy is flourishing in China; engineer and stand-up comedian Anu Vaidyanathan’s take on what it’s like to be a female stand-up comic; and – just in time for the weekend – a list of the 25 best stand-up comedy specials currently on Netflix.

Enjoy Cinco de Funny.

Men Can’t Stop Hitting On The World’s Oldest Female Stand-Up Comic

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:It’s an unfortunate reality for female stand-up comedians — there’s a subset of men who believe lady comics are dying for their affection. And according to the world’s oldest female stand-up comic D’yan Forest, it never lets up–even when you’re 88 years old. “One thing that has surprised me is the number of young men who hit on me after a show,” she told The Guardian. “They’ll stand outside afterwards, waiting to talk to me.”

Comedy Craze: Stand-up scene flourishes in China

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:From small, underground clubs to national fame, stand-up comedy has well and truly gone mainstream in China. Our reporter Wang Siwen talks to the leader of one stand-up comedy company to find out why the format is so appealing to Chinese audiences.

For the May Day holiday, Xiaoguo Comedy has staged nearly 60 performances in 11 cities, with 30-thousand people coming to its shows.

What It Takes To Be A Woman In Stand-Up Comedy: Anu Vaidyanathan

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:I am an Engineer who loves Engineering. I still do. When I take a break from my more creative pursuits, I find myself poring over my old Signals & Systems lecture notes. I realise in writing this that I am the stereotype I break down in my comedy.

The nerdy engineer, with no personality, fumbling with her words when it came to matters of the heart, a major change of orientation or just dropping old friendships when posits feminism on social media and practices a healthy apathy with common courtesy towards another working woman. I’ve been thinking about why I got into standup comedy in the first place. While I’d like to think it is the incarceration of the pandemic, which made filmmaking impossible and writing beyond two years unbearable, I know it started a lot earlier than that.

The 25 Best Stand-Up Comedy Specials On Netflix Right Now (May 2023)

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Going out on a limb here: you could probably use a good laugh. Fortunately, a lot of the best stand-up comedy is more than just silly stuff. Today’s most popular stand-up comedians have expanded their vision to become more like camp counselors and philosophers who can also tell a mean fart joke and make you laugh out loud. Fortunately, it’s fairly obvious where to turn for The Funny these days because no streaming service has invested in stand-up quite like Netflix. Forget the world and stream some acerbic humor because we’re listing the Top 25.
