When I emigrated from Shanghai to Vancouver, Canada, at the age of 10, I really wanted to learn English as fast as possible so I could communicate with my friends properly. I’ve always gravitated toward comedy, so I watched everything comedy related. I watched stand-ups, sitcoms, comedy movies, and even late-night talk shows. I loved Conan O’Brien, Stephen Colbert, and Louis C.K. For some reason, these older white men really spoke to me as a young Chinese girl.

‘After the gig the comedians all leant away from me, as if unfunniness was contagious’
When you start out in comedy, it helps if you delude yourself with an elevated sense of your own importance, as if the world has been waiting with bated breath for you to take the stage.
Without this little tweak in your perception of reality, you would realise the cold hard truth, and the truth is no one cares. You could evaporate into thin air in the middle of a set, and the next comic would simply take the stage, and the world wouldn’t miss a single beat. If you recognised that basic fact at the very beginning, you probably would never bother trying. You have to try in order to get hooked.

When stand-up legend Jerry Seinfeld hinted at a reunion of his ’90s sitcom from the stage in Boston on Oct. 7, his fans cheered — first the ones in the audience, and then on social media.
In an Instagram video clip from the set, Seinfeld called it “… a little secret for you about the ending (of the show), but I can’t really tell it.”
