At first blush a comedian’s hands wouldn’t seem too important.

After all, audiences focus on the jokes, and jokes are words, right?

Not always. Watch some of the best comedians, and notice how they use their bodies to help sell jokes.

Comics don’t have to be overly animated. Even a well timed little fist punch can be the difference between a joke landing or bombing.

Today’s Stand-Up Spotlight’s top story offers budding comics some ideas for being more physical.

In the second story Danny Cho discusses his minimum three-laugh-per-minute approach to comedy. There’s also news of a comedy festival coming to Tampa in January, and a preview of Dark Side of Comedy Season 2.

Start the week with the funny.

With no props other than a microphone, the comedian makes people burst into laughter from the stage. Ever since he was young, the now 41-year-old comedian has loved making people laugh. He majored in economics at the University of California, Los Angeles. After graduating, he landed a high-paying job at a consulting firm. But he didn’t give up on his comedy career, and after work he would go to perform on stage. Stand-up comedy meant more to him than anything else in his life.

The Sunshine Comedy Fest kicks off on January 11th and runs through January 14th. It’s taking place in Tampa and St. Petersburg at various hotspots for comedy shows, including Sidesplitters Comedy Club and the Floridan Social Club.
