In 1961, Newhart won three Grammy awards: Album of the Year and Best Comedy Performance – Spoken Word for “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart” and Best New Artist of the Year.

Comedy is a complicated form of art to hone and sell as it often relies on many failed attempts to perfect a hilarious joke. Even after achieving hard-earned success, history is filled with prolific comedians losing their lives to addiction and illness. Moreover, outrage and so-called cancel culture have complicated a career which relies on the statutes of freedom of speech. Several films have connected these dots to understand what makes comedians such a vulnerable artistic community. Here are 10 documentaries that give an insight into the self-destructive forces of comedy.
