Is it time for Comedy 101?

That’s a course comedian Jimmy Carr believes ought to be taught in schools – and he makes some interesting points.

While learning how to create stand-up comedy, children would bolster their linguistic skills, deal with important issues, and begin to learn about who they are.

He argues that schools already teach music classes, so why not treat stand-up comedy as simply another art?

Hopefully it doesn’t become an either/or situation. There’s a place for both art forms in our education system.

Who knows? Maybe teaching comedy early would even help with conflict resolution – a skill in short supply these days.

Today’s Stand-Up Spotlight also includes news about upcoming media appearances for Nate Bargatze and Kevin Bridges, as well as a look at the state of comedy a month after the Russell Brand allegations.

Event cinema has been flourishing over the last few years, what with the ever growing popularity of National Theatre Live, broadcasts from the Royal Opera House and the gargantuan success of Taylor Swift’s Eras concert film, which has been attracting people to multiplexes over the last few days.

It’s been a month since the Russell Brand allegations became public. This is how women in comedy are feeling…

One month ago, a joint investigation by the Sunday Times, the Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches, revealed allegations against Russell Brand, accusing him of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse. Brand has strongly denied all allegations.

In the weeks since, conversations around misogyny and sexual violence against women have dominated social media and traditional media. Much of the conversations have been littered with even more misogyny and victim-shaming.
