STAND-UP RUNDOWN:

DELRAY BEACH – Theo Von is one of the most popular comics nationally, but he hasn’t forgotten his roots.

The Louisiana native sees inspiration in the state’s colorful people and their unique outlook on life.

He’s turned that inspiration into quite a career. Currently on tour as part of the Return of the Rat Tour, Von’s resume also includes a Netflix special and one of the nation’s top comedy podcasts.

Von no longer calls Louisiana home, but he did return their recently to perform. He also granted an interview to Louisiana’s 225 Magazine, in which he discusses his alma mater (LSU), what it’s like to now call Los Angeles and Nashville home, and what it means to return to Louisiana.

Also in today’s Stand-Up Spotlight, there’s a “Paste” feature on comic Gabe Mollica, another review of Nate Bargatze’s latest comedy special and a feature on the Doug Stanhope movie “Road Dog.”

Only a few more hours until the weekend. Remember to keep it funny.

Comedian Theo Von captivates crowds with Louisiana-style stories about growing up in the South

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:“You can find just as much joy and humor in almost anyone in Louisiana,” Von says. “We have a very colorful history and way of looking at humanity. And I think we cope with a lot of everyday life with laughter in Louisiana. People love to laugh there, and people love to sit around and joke around together. And that was where I’m from, so I just never stopped wanting that.”

a lot about growing up in Covington, Louisiana. Though the comedian has come a long way from his hometown, he still loves to talk about his childhood and prides himself on making audiences laugh with tales and “Southern lore.”

Gabe Mollica Is Just Happy to Be Here

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Gabe Mollica’s show, Solo, is a perfect cohesion of theme and structure in that it is a one-man show about, well, feeling alone. Where a lot of stand-up shows may revel in the theatrical or over-exuberant, like your most dramatic friend telling a juicy story at brunch, Mollica’s work is quieter but no less engaging, more akin to an intimate conversation tucked in the corner of a crowded party. It’s almost ironic that the show centers around Mollica confessing that he has no friends since his energy is so welcoming and his presence so warm that by the end, you consider him part of your own inner circle. Paste spoke to him over Zoom about his show, his comedic influences, and his process.

Nate Bargatze: Hello World Review – a fun special for the whole family

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Nate Bargatze broke into the stand-up comedy world in Fallon’s Clean Cut Comedy Tour in 2013. Since then, he has had several stand-up specials on Netflix and Comedy Central. He comes to Prime Video with his full-hour special titled Nate Bargatze: Hello World. Bargatze is one of my favorite comedians. Does his latest special live up to the hype? Let’s dive in.

The Road Dog

STAND-UP RUNDOWN:Director/co-writer Greg Glienna’s feature film, The Road Dog, tells the story of a man who has the opportunity to take a do-over on his life while forced to confront why his life went wrong in the first place.

Doug Stanhope is Jimmy Quinn, a veteran stand-up comedian trying to survive in the once vibrant comedy club scene that now finds itself on life support. Having spent his entire life traveling from one club to the next, the comedian is dubbed “The Road Dog.” However, unlike his more successful early days, Jimmy can barely draw a crowd, and ironically his dark material centers around his losing battle with alcoholism.
