DELRAY BEACH – Comedians sometimes walk a tightrope when it comes to adding personal experiences with friends and spouses to their acts.
Tell too much, they risk losing the people they care about. Don’t get specific enough, risk the joke falling flat.
To that point, below is a story about a Tik Tok influencer who feels violated because her ex-boyfriend, who happens to be a stand-up comedian, incorporated graphic stories about their time together into his act.
Now, we’re all for embarrassing social media influencers, but it does lead to an interesting question: As a comedian, where do you draw the line when it comes to incorporating real life experiences into your act?
Also in today’s Stand-Up Spotlight, there’s news of a New York comedian who’s now a wanted man for is role in a subway shooting; a profile of British comedian Damian Callinan; an interesting story about the comedy scene in – of all places – Sudan, where stand-up is helping people deal with the effects of a civil war; and a curious story about how English-language stand-up comedy is gaining a foothold in Mexico.

Natalie is an associate producer who shares fun stories about what it is like to live in New York on her TikTok page @newyorkisntdead. Recently, the New Yorker went viral online after she revealed that her ex-boyfriend used extremely personal stories about their relationship for his comedy stand-up routine.
She later discovered the comedian had used her for material in his stand up routine.
