DELRAY BEACH – Leave it to a 25-year-old white guy to explain to the world how racist the process of doing laundry can be.
Humorously, comic John Loveless has a point..
Loveless first made the observation a few years ago while doing his own laundry.
“And then I look at what I’m doing and I’m like, this is pretty racist,” Loveless said.
Immediately Loveless knew he would incorporate it into his stand-up act.
A few years later, Loveless crafted the observation into a winning bit. The above video, recorded as part of Nadeem Awad’s video special at Melody Ave. studios in West Palm Beach, offers comedic proof of Loveless’ thesis.
While the joke’s substance hasn’t changed much over the last couple years, the world’s perception has.
The current nationwide bout of racial tension only seems to have primed audiences for the bit.
“It almost feels like the joke is more intense now than when I came up with it a couple years ago,” Loveless said.
In the entire time he’s performed the routine, Loveless says he’s only received one complaint.
“If I had to think about the thousands of people who heard the joke and only one person complained – that’s pretty good,” Loveless said.
Born in Ohio, Loveless moved to South Florida as a child. He’s been performing for less than five years, with appearances at the Palm Beach Improv and the iHeart Radio studios on his resume.
Observational comedy comprises most of Loveless’ act, and he describes those observations as “eclectic and goofy.”
In May he’ll join Rodney Badger, Sean Mullins and Drew Illa on the Dirty Laundry Tour – the name of which doesn’t have anything to do with his bit.
“Surprisingly, I’m the only one with a laundry joke,” Loveless said, laughing.
The tour begins with two May 11 shows at the Tin Roof in Orlando.
